For explanation of engravings Yositora Utagava
In the picture there is Tomoe Godzen, the wife of Minamoto Yosinaka – the great shogun. She was one of the few women-fighters in the Japanese history. Here in the picture she is represented in the battle of Avadzu in 1184 where she was fighting side by side with her husband.
