As you know, all the roles in the Japanese Kabuki theater were performed by men. Actors were considered the lowest class in society, but in reality they had a very great popularity and love of the people. Noble samurai, daimé and ladies, stealthily changing clothes, made their way to look at the spectacle of Kabuki. The engraving depicts the farewell of lovers.
