The series of “A Hundred Famous Sites of Edo” was a kind of an illustrated guidebook to famous places. In the country which was an island state they were looking for any reason to change places – either a pilgrimage to the Orthodox Churches or a trip around nature reserves. The sites of Edo (now Tokyo) and other famous places of Japan were very popular with travelers and those who were not able to travel.
