Professional warriors – samurai – who served the feudal aristocracy at first, finally formed a separate caste in the Japanese society winning significant privileges for themselves. A sword became a symbol of samurai and his loyalty to his master. It is not the arms only, but a sacred thing. Only the member of the samurai’s caste was allowed to wear a short sword (katana) and a long one (vakasasi).
